Carrefour customers will soon be able to trade off old mobile phones for shopping vouchers.

This comes as the company partners with two mobile phone recycling service providers to enable this service.

Already, there are 50 locations where customers can exchange their old phones in Carrefour hypermarkets and supermarkets. By January, Carrefour aims at having 250 such collection points installed.

Over 199 million smartphones are estimated to be stored in homes with 15% of the phones sold being reconditioned, resold or recycled.

ecoATM will be used to manage the gadget’s collection point. The service provider will take note of the phone’s estimated value and model. Once the owner agrees with the amount offered, they will be offered a Carrefour gift voucher that can be redeemed on any items sold.

With this brand-new partnership, Carrefour is taking yet another step towards the circular economy and is bolstering its commitments to sustainable development. This innovative service is designed to enrich the in-store experience for customers while at the same time boosting their purchasing power

ecoATM will then recondition the phones and sell them to Back Market. Gadgets that cannot be sold will be recycled where possible.

The company’s gadget’s collection points will supplement the carrefour occasion counters where the brand’s consumers exchange different products for cash.

We’ve reported that railway stations across UK will soon get contactless ticketing.
