China Leads Generative AI Patents Race

China has significantly outperformed other countries in the area of inventions using artificial intelligence, including such as chatbots.

China Leads Generative AI Patents Race

Data from the United Nations (UN), released on Wednesday, July 3, indicate that the number of AI-related patents filed in the Asian country is six times higher than that of the United States. In this case, it means the amount recorded during the entire observation period. It is also worth noting that the United States is China’s closest competitor in the mentioned sphere of activity.

Data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which oversees the system of joint recognition of patents by countries, indicate that more than 50,000 patent applications for generative artificial intelligence have been filed over the past decade. This advanced technology can produce original content in the form of text materials, images, computer code, and even music.

A quarter of patent applications for artificial intelligence were filed last year.

Christopher Harrison, WIPO Patent Analytics Manager, says that the machine intelligence industry is a sphere of activity that is on a trajectory of active development, demonstrating acceleration. The expectation of even greater growth in the mentioned industry was also noted.

WIPO data shows that between 2014 and 2023, China applied for more than 38,000 generative artificial intelligence inventions. The United States’ equivalent figure for the same period was 6,276 applications.

Christopher Harrison says that the Asian country’s patent applications cover a wide range of spheres of activity, including, among others, autonomous driving and document management.

In the international ranking of the number of patent applications, South Korea, Japan, and India took the third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. It is worth noting that India has demonstrated the fastest growth rates.

Christopher Harrison says that generative artificial intelligence, which can mimic human discourse, is already widely used by retailers and others to serve customers. The WIPO Patent Analytics Manager also stated that generative AI has the potential to transform many other sectors of the economy, including publishing, transportation, security, and science.

Christopher Harrison believes that patent data indicates that artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on many industrial segments in the future.

It is worth noting that during the period of active dissemination and scaling of the use of AI, cybersecurity is of particular importance. Scammers also have access to advanced technology. In this case, user awareness is important. For example, an Internet search query such as how to know if my camera is hacked will allow anyone to get information about signs of unauthorized access to the device.
