Sam Altman Denies Start of GPT-5 Training

A few months ago, one of the most popular startups in the world, whose activities are supported by Microsoft, promised not to start working on a successor to GPT-4 for a certain period. This statement was made against the background of concern expressed by the heads of large companies and scientists about the intensive and, in a sense, forced development and dissemination of large language models created by OpenAI.

Sam Altman said at a conference in India on June 7 that his startup needs to do a lot of work, without which it is impossible to launch a new configuration of artificial intelligence. He stated that the company is working on new ideas that, according to the firm, have value, but their practical implementation is not a matter of the near future.

At the end of March, more than 1,100 people, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter calling on all artificial intelligence laboratories to suspend training of AI systems superior to GPT-4 in terms of power for at least 6 months.

A few weeks after the letter was made public, Sam Altman said that this appeal was of a general nature without specifying the technical nuances in respect of which a decision should be made to pause. He also stated that he is OpenAI. Separately, Sam Altman stressed that the company has no corresponding plans for the near future.

On Wednesday, June 7, the head of OpenAI again denied the existence of intentions to start training GPT-5 in the near future. He also stated that the startup is studying the potentially possible negative consequences of the intensive introduction of artificial intelligence-based technologies through methods such as external audits, re-teaming, and security tests. Sam Altman said that after completing work on the creation of GPT-4, the company needed more than six months to carry out work on preparing this product for its presentation and subsequent launch.

The head of OpenAI during a recent interview stated that his firm does not support initiatives involving the introduction of regulatory measures against small startups working in the field of artificial intelligence.

Sam Altman’s trip to India is part of his massive effort to connect with AI industry legislators and players around the world. This activity should ultimately provide confidence in the readiness of OpenAI to interact with regulators. Sam Altman urges lawmakers to analyze the potential negative results of the large-scale spread of artificial intelligence in order to take measures to minimize the risk of incidents related to this process.
